Research Interests:

My main research goal focuses on machine intelligent systems, including algorithm development and system design. The research areas span from fundamental electronic circuits to signal and information processing, and to system realization and evaluation. The short-term research objective is to exploit computational intelligence methodologies for Brain-Machine Interface, and the long-term goal is to incorporate bio-inspired, brain-like computational capabilities into next-generation computers and robots.

My current research interests include the following domains:

Computational intelligence, fuzzy neural networks (FNN), cognitive neuro-engineering, brain-computer interface, multimedia information processing, machine learning, robotics, and intelligent sensing and control.

 I devoted myself to the research of Computational Intelligence (CI) since her infant stage of early 1990’s. I took the lead in developing the models of fuzzy neural networks (FNN), which have now become one of the most prevailing research areas in CI. Since 1996, the Intelligent Information Technology (iIT) has been my major research interest.  In 2003, I founded the Brain Research Center (BRC) at the National Chao-Tung University (NCTU) and served as its director to this day. By applying the CI and iIT to the research of cognition neuroscience, I have focused mainly on the area of Translational Neuroscience since 2003, trying to bring basic findings in neuroscience into daily life applications. To achieve this goal, I have focused on 2 major problems: Natural Cognition and Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). Natural cognition studies the brain and its behavior at work. One major research problem is the study of brain dynamics of alertness, drowsiness, motional sickness, distraction, orientation, etc. during driving. For real-world applications of BCI, we have designed wearable and wireless devices for measuring brain waves (EEG signals) with dry sensors and developed algorithms for brain waves analysis. The Brain Research Center is now a platform for conducting various interdisciplinary research activities in cognition neuroscience and engineering.

My research contributions on both aspects of theory and practice include:

  1. Fuzzy Neural Networks (FNNs): Since I published the first fuzzy neural network model (“Neural-Network-Based Fuzzy Logic Control and Decision System”) in IEEE Transactions on Computers in 1991, FNN has attracted great attention globally and become a major area in the computational intelligence realm. The total number of citations for this pioneering FNN paper is 1398 up to January 20, 2016. Since the publication of this fundamental FNN model, I have also developed a series of FNN models with various learning capabilities, including structure and parameter learning using supervised, reinforcement, and unsupervised learning, suitable for different learning environments. This collection of FNN models has inspired new enhanced models and applications by other researchers. I am also the co-author of the first graduate textbook on FNN, Neural Fuzzy Systems: A Neuro-Fuzzy Synergism to Intelligent Systems, Prentice Hall, 1996, 797 pages (ISBN 0-13-261413-8), of which the current number of citations is 2764 up to January 20, 2016.

Natural Cognition: By applying iIT and FNN to the area of cognition neuroscience, we have performed in-depth studies on the following topics: (1) neural cognitive brain dynamics involved while a subject is driving, with the facilitation of an VR-based driving simulator, (2) alertness/drowsiness brain dynamics and behavioral changes in response to auditory signals (bio-feedback) in a driving environment, (3) correlation of brain waves and haptic feedback in a visuo-motor tracking task (force feedback), (4) co-modulatory spectral changes in independent brain processes correlated with task performance to investigate the neural mechanisms mediating spectral activations of cortical areas (co-modulation), (5) nonlinear and nonstationary brain connectivity modeling from recorded EEG signals by transfer entropy method, a model-free measure of effective connectivity based on information theory. These studies with innovative results were all published in the NeuroImage — a high impact scientific journal.

  1. Brain-Computer Interface (BCI): We have designed and developed ultra-lightweight, wearable, wireless, low-cost, whole-head EEG systems with successively higher sensor densities that can allow assessment of brain activities of participants actively performing ordinary tasks in natural body positions and situations within a real operational environment. Several dry sensors were developed and patented. These sensors do not require skin preparations and gel applications that conventional wet sensors do to ensure good electrical conductivity between sensors and skin. Based on the invented dry sensors, a series of EEG helmets were developed, called MINDO4, MINDO16, MINDO32, MINDO64, and MINDO80 for measuring 4 to 80 channels of EEG signals. The MINDO series has been used in about 60 institutes in the world. These results have been published in several top journals, including Proceedings of the IEEE. Because of these achievements, I was invited to organize the Advanced Brain-Computer Interface Special Session in the Centennial Celebration Issue of Proceeding of the IEEE in May 2012, and to contribute a paper on Real-World Neuroimaging in the first (inauguration) issue of IEEE Access in May, 2013.

  1. Bio-inspired Intelligent Multimedia Information Processing: Multimedia information technology (IT) is the kernel in this 3C (Computer, Communications, and Consumer) electronics era. Its main challenges are to understand the human perceptual systems and to incorporate the biological models and features of human perceptual systems into the multimedia information processing techniques to process the multimedia signals in reasonable time and space bandwidth. This so-called Bio-inspired Intelligent Multimedia Information Processing Technology can highly increase the signal perceptual quality of advanced 3C products/applications in reasonable hardware and software cost.

 Major Research Projects:

Principal Investigator (PI) of about 273 research projects funded by government and industries from 1992 to 2016. The total amount of gained research funding is up to NT$1,236,807,323 (US$41,226,944). Especially, I served as the PI of several international large-scale research projects on intelligent systems, natural cognition, and brain-machine interface that span several countries and industries:

  1. International Center of Excellence for Advanced Bioengineering Research, funded by Taiwan NSC (National Science Council), 2011 – 2015, amount: US$ 6.65 million This Center conducts interdisciplinary research in Neural Engineering, Translation Neuroscience, and Healthcare. The goals are to enhance our understanding of human perception and cognition, to create and apply innovative technology to advance neuroscience research, and to develop novel methods and strategies for improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological diseases and injuries. In this project, I focus on two research topics: Computational Neuroscience and Bio-sensing Technology.
  2. Cognition and Neuroergonomics (CAN) Collaborative Technology Alliance (CTA), funded by US Army Research Lab, 2010 – 2020, amount: US$ 6.5 millions (my share). This project consists of three research topics: Neurocognition, Neurocomputation, and Neurotechnology. I am the PI under the topic of Neurotechnology, studying the Effects of Vehicle Motion and Cognitive Fatigue, and Wearable EEG Devices Development and Testing. This project is the first time that US ARL supports Taiwan’s organization in large scale, and it is one of the major projects of Neuroscience and Engineering Research in USA.
  3. Development of Smart Living Technologies, funded by Taiwan NSC and Farglory Construction Company, 2008 – 2015, amount: US$ 8.2 millions. According to users’ needs and real-life experiences by testing in living labs, this project has developed smart living technologies and their service models, including i-Home (smart home technology), i-Service (smart services platform), i-Sensing (environment monitoring), i-Care (home care), i-Traffic (intelligent traffic systems), and i-Light (smart energy management). The whole project was awarded the LLG Award 2011 with citation “Innovation and Excellence for the Smart Urban Technologies.” The LLG (Living Labs Global) is an NGO started in 2003, connecting 52 countries, 127 cities, and more than 160 organizations/companies, as a platform for service innovation (more than 500 showcases).

Professional Society Services:

Volunteerism” is the theme for my services in professional societies. As a 25-year member and volunteer in Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in general and in IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) in particular, I find my participation to be professionally and personally rewarding. I believe that volunteerism is a core value of IEEE, and my approach is to help other members and myself as the volunteers in IEEE CIS. The service paths I have being doing including membership (advocating new and high-level membership services), Publications (editorial board services), Technical Activities (technical committees services and cross-region cooperation), Conferences (organizing services), and Operation (creating and promoting volunteer opportunities).

 

I was elected as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy systems (ERA Tier A*, Top 1% in engineering fields) from 2011. The submission of TFS has increased tremendously from 377 (in 2010) to about 870 (in 2015). In addition, the Impact Factor (IF) has increased from 2.695 (in 2010) to 8.746 (in 2014). The IF of TFS in 2014 ranked number 1 out of 123 publications in the CS/AI Categories, ranked number 1 out of 146 publications among all IEEE Publications, and ranked number 1 out of 249 publications in the EEE Categories
